Essential Oils Quality and Safety |
In order to get the best and safe results from Essential Oils you should be aware of these safety techniques.
Aromatherapy:
Aromatherapy is an ancient art going as far back as 4500 BC. The vital element in aromatherapy treatment is the pure essential oil.
Pure essential oils are derived by various methods from plants, flowers, herbs, spices, woods and fibbers.
Essential Oils Methods of Extractions:
Steam Distillation: the most widely used and the best way of extracting the purest essential oil. The plant material is put into a still and then heated with water to steam, or both. The intense heat causes the tiny sacs containing the oils to burst, releasing their contents into the resulting vapor. This is then channeled into a condenser and cooled, causing it to become liquid. The liquid, which now consists of oil and water, is separated, leaving the pure essential oil, and a floral or herbal water.
Solvent Extraction: this is the most popular method of obtaining highly fragrant floral oils. The plant material is placed in a container with the solvent and heated so that the solvent can extract the oils. The resulting mixture is then filtered and becomes what is know as concrete The concrete is then mixed with alcohol, chilled and filtered, and the alcohol then evaporates off, leaving behind the highly perfumed oil which is called an absolute.
Expression (Cold Press): this applies only to citrus oils. The rinds, or zest, are simply squeezed by a machine (or sometimes by hand) to release their oils.
Essential Oils Safety:
Pure Essential oils are the active ingredients of a plant in a highly concentrated and potent form. They therefore need to be treated with care and should be diluted prior to applying to skin.
Common dilution blends are:
for the face - one percent essential oil to carrier oil
for the body - three percent essential oil to carrier oil
Skin Test:
This is very important if you have a sensitive skin or are prone to allergic reactions.
Dilute one drop of oil into 1 teaspoon of carrier oil. Rub a little onto the inside of your elbow, cover with Band-Aid and leave for 24 hours. If there is any reaction, do not use that oil.
Always keep them out of children's reach!
Also, be aware when purchasing aromatherapy candles. Unless they are made with essential oils there are no health benefit to them.
Quality of Essential Oils:
It is important how the plants are grown. If a plant has been treated with pesticides or chemical fertilizers you run the risk that the chemical will be extracted with the essential oil from the plant.
ALL of our oils are ethically produced and are free from pesticides or chemical fertilizers.
